“I love this place,” Rose says as we leave Silver’s. It’s a simple diner halfway between Stoneview and Silver Falls.

“How did you know to get the nachos?” Rachel asks me.

The more we talked during lunch, the more I realized that she is so good for my sister, but she deserves so much better than someone like her. Rachel is as pure as they come, and Rose…well, she’s a White. We all come with little feelings and a god complex. Rose might have Lik and Sam wrapped around her finger, but love truly made Rachel blind.

“Jamie, of course. She’s always said they have the best in town. I only come here for the nachos.”

“Same,” Rachel laughs. “She says the same thing to everyone. She’s right, though. How do you know Jamie?”

“Ah,” I chuckle. “I’m sure you’ve always known Jamie with Jake.”

She nods, and I can already see Rose rolling her eyes. “Here we fucking go.”

“She was mine first,” I say simply.

“What?” Rachel chokes. “But Jake and her are so…perfect?”

We all get in my car, Rachel at the back and Rose next to me. I drive out of the parking lot and make my way to Silver Falls rather than back to Stoneview.

“Nate was only using her to spy on me and Jake,” Rose tells her fiancée. “Don’t feel bad for him.”

“I was in love,” I lie.

“Shut the fuck up. You wouldn’t know love if it hit you right in the face.”

That gets a laugh out of me. I cared about Jamie, in a possessive way. But mainly, I cared the same way I do about everything that is useful to me. As long as they serve a purpose, I like to have them around. I used her all the way till the end. Shit, when she found out I even used my story with Bianco to squeeze some more out of her. She was so fucking clueless it could have broken my heart. It didn’t, though.

I used to have a favorite coffee shop when I was younger and lived in D.C. I would go every day without fail. I liked many of their drinks, the staff was nice, and it was within walking distance of where I lived. It was perfect.

That place was special to me.

Then one day they turned it into a restaurant, and it lost its purpose to me. It became useless for my coffee needs.

So I stopped going.

I adored Jamie when she was useful. She was my favorite. I was loyal to her. She was special to me. Then she fell in love with Jake, and she became useless. So I let my brother have her.

Suddenly, she meant nothing. But it’s hilarious to taunt my brother about my past with her. Probably why he refused to see me today.

“Well, you have a wife now,” Rachel says politely. “I’m sure you’re well over Jamie.”

She must have spent a lot of time with Lik, Sam, and Rose, to not even mention the fact that I admitted I kidnapped Kay. She seems used to that kind of shit.
